Quick Take

Worth trying for sinus issues or post-op swelling; limited value as a general supplement.

Bromelain is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes extracted from pineapple stems and fruit (Ananas comosus). It is found in pineapple, especially the stem and core, but supplements provide much higher enzyme activity than food. Bromelain has anti-inflammatory, anti-edema, and fibrinolytic actions, and may also help break down dietary protein. Human trials suggest modest benefits for post-operative swelling, sinus symptoms, osteoarthritis pain, and protein digestion. People recovering from minor surgery, those with chronic sinus problems, and adults with mild osteoarthritis are most likely to notic

Proven Benefits

Reduces post-operative swelling
02
Improves osteoarthritis pain
03
Reduces sinusitis symptoms
04
May lower inflammation
05
May aid protein digestion
06
May reduce allergy symptoms

Protocol

Amount
500-1000 mg
Frequency
2-3 times daily
When
On an empty stomach for anti-inflammatory effects; with meals if used as a digestive aid.

Onset Time

Hours for digestion; 3-7 days for swelling/pain.

Who Should Consider

Adults recovering from dental or nasal surgery
People with chronic sinusitis or allergic rhinitis
Adults with mild osteoarthritis
People who want digestive enzyme support

How It Works

Bromelain proteases can reduce fibrin deposition and may alter prostaglandin and bradykinin signaling, which can limit swelling. As a protease, it can also hydrolyze dietary proteins in the gastrointestinal tract when taken with food.
