Quick Take

Worth considering only if you have confirmed or suspected low stomach acid; unnecessary and potentially irritating for others.

Betaine HCl is a synthetic salt of betaine and hydrochloric acid; there is no meaningful food source. It temporarily lowers gastric pH, which activates pepsin and helps protein digestion. Human studies show it can raise stomach acidity in hypochlorhydria, but direct outcome data are limited. It is most relevant for adults with confirmed low stomach acid or age-related acid decline.

Proven Benefits

01
Restores gastric acidity
02
May support protein digestion
03
May support B12 and mineral absorpt
04
May reduce post-meal bloating

Protocol

Amount
650-2000 mg
Frequency
With each main meal, up to 3 times daily
When
Immediately before or at the start of a protein-containing meal; never on an empty stomach.

Onset Time

Acute, within minutes of ingestion with a meal.

Who Should Consider

Adults with diagnosed hypochlorhydria
Older adults with suspected low stomach acid
People with persistent fullness after protein-heavy meals

How It Works

In the stomach, betaine HCl dissociates to release hydrochloric acid, quickly lowering gastric pH. That acidic environment converts pepsinogen to pepsin and may improve mineral solubility and the release of vitamin B12 from food.
